Can Your Mobile Number Influence Your Well-Being? A Five-Year Study Opens a New Debate

A newly published study followed 3,000 people to examine whether a personalized mobile number, selected using an individual’s date of birth and name, may be associated with changes in quality of life.

For most people, a mobile number is simply a combination of ten digits. Yet it follows us everywhere. It appears on business cards, banking records, social profiles, professional networks and almost every important communication of daily life. Could such a persistent digital identity carry psychological or symbolic meaning?

A new research paper by Sidhharrth S Kumaar explores this question through the lens of Mobile Numerology.

Published in the International Journal of Jyotish Research, the paper titled “Mobile numerology and quality of life: a five-year longitudinal study of personalized mobile number assignment based on date of birth and name” followed 3,000 participants over five years.

What the Study Found

Participants received personalized mobile number guidance based on their date of birth and name. Their quality of life was then assessed at different intervals using the WHOQOL-BREF framework.

The study found that quality-of-life scores changed only marginally during the first 30 days. A much clearer difference emerged after 90 days and remained visible during the one-year and five-year assessments.

At the end of five years, 2,700 participants remained in the study, giving it a retention rate of 90%. Among these participants, the average quality-of-life score was 50% higher than the baseline score recorded at the beginning of the study.

“The most interesting finding was not an immediate change, but the gradual pattern that became visible over time,” said Sidhharrth S Kumaar, author of the study and founder of NumroVani.

Why This Research Matters

Mobile personalization is usually discussed in terms of devices, applications, wallpapers, screen time and user behaviour. This study examines a different and largely unexplored dimension: the meaning people attach to their mobile numbers.

A mobile number is not merely used to make calls. Over time, it can become closely linked with a person’s identity, career, relationships and social presence. The study introduces Mobile Numerology as a form of culturally embedded personalization and opens a wider discussion around symbolic digital identifiers and subjective well-being.

“For years, numerology has largely remained outside structured academic investigation. The purpose of this research is to bring measurable outcomes, transparent data and scientific scrutiny into the conversation,” Kumaar said.

Does This Prove That Mobile Numerology Improves Life?

No. The paper clearly states that the findings show an association, not causation.

Since the research was observational and did not include a control group, the improvements cannot be attributed solely to the change in mobile number. Belief, expectation, behavioural adaptation, perceived personal alignment, changing life circumstances and other psychological or social factors may also have influenced the results.

This caution, however, does not make the findings irrelevant. It makes them a starting point for more rigorous investigation.

Future research could use control groups and randomized designs to examine whether personalized mobile numbers have an independent effect or whether the observed changes arise through psychological meaning, increased confidence, behavioural choices or expectancy effects.

A New Direction for Numerology Research

The study moves Mobile Numerology beyond prediction and positions it within emerging research on personalization, cultural psychology, digital identity and well-being.

“This paper is not a final answer,” Kumaar said. “It is an invitation for researchers to test the idea through stronger experimental designs and explore why people may respond to personally meaningful digital identities.”

The research appears in Volume 11, Issue 8, Part A of the International Journal of Jyotish Research.
